Anyone searching for a stable height adjustable desk eventually asks the same question: why do some desks stay firm at standing height while others shake when you type? In most cases the answer starts inside the lifting column. This article explains how column profile, dimensions, telescopic structure and loading work together, using the specifications of our Electric Height Adjustable Desk Single Motor-2 Stage 7545 as a practical reference.
An electric height adjustable desk is more than a motor and a tabletop. The lifting columns carry the desktop, the load on it and every push, lean or keystroke a user applies. They are the structural link between the floor-level frame and the work surface, so any flex in them shows up at the desktop.
Three design variables decide how a column behaves: the geometry of its cross-section, its outer dimensions and wall thickness, and the way its sections overlap as it extends. Stability must also hold at every height. A desk is usually firmest when lowered; the real test is at full extension, where the column acts like a longer cantilever and small tolerances are magnified at the tabletop.
You can browse the full range of lifting columns and standing desk frames to see how these variables vary by model.
Common lifting column profiles are rectangular, square and oval. Each resists bending differently, because stiffness depends on the second moment of area (often called moment of inertia) of the section. In simple beam theory, bending deflection is inversely proportional to the material's elastic modulus multiplied by that moment of inertia, so shape matters as much as the steel itself.
A rectangular section is stiff in the direction of its longer side and less stiff across its shorter side. A square section is balanced in both directions. An oval section is lighter and smooth to look at, but it generally gives up some resistance to twisting (torsion) for the same material.
Wall thickness has a strong effect too: material placed farther from the centre of the section contributes far more to stiffness than material near it. That is why a hollow steel tube can be both light and rigid. Rectangular steel profiles are widely used in desk frames because they are easy to form and weld, simple to fit with internal guides, and offer high stiffness in the direction where the desk is pushed most, while keeping the frame slim under the desktop.
Lateral stability describes resistance to side-to-side movement. Wider and deeper columns increase the moment of inertia quickly because depth is cubed in the formula. The 7545 frame uses a 75 × 45 mm outer profile. As a simple illustration (assuming a 1.5 mm wall, which is not a published specification), the 75 mm direction is roughly twice as stiff in bending as the 45 mm direction.
| Bending direction | Approx. moment of inertia (illustrative) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Across the 75 mm side | about 276,000 mm⁴ | Stiffer; place against the main push direction |
| Across the 45 mm side | about 125,000 mm⁴ | More flexible; frame crossbars help here |
Column size must also suit the frame and desktop. The 7545 frame is adjustable from 1100 to 1500 mm wide, so one column design can support different tabletop sizes. A wide, deep desktop with a narrow frame creates a longer lever arm and more wobble; a well-matched frame width keeps that arm short. Our Single Motor-2 Stage 6545 and Dual Motor-2 Stage 8050 show how other combinations are matched to different loads.
A two-stage telescopic column consists of an outer section fixed to the frame and an inner section driven up and down by the motor and spindle. As the desk rises, the inner section leaves the outer one, and only the overlapping length still provides support. Less overlap means less resistance to leaning, so lateral movement tends to increase with height.
For the 7545, the minimum height is 695 mm, the maximum is 1175 mm and the stroke is 480 mm. At the maximum, the sections overlap least, so alignment matters most. Two manufacturing details decide how well this works:
The rated speed of 25 mm/s means a full stroke takes about 19 seconds. Smooth, even motion at that speed depends on the same alignment and guiding quality, and it pairs with control units and handsets that manage the movement.
A desktop rarely carries its weight evenly. A monitor arm on one side, a PC on the other, or a user leaning on a corner changes the force each column carries and adds a twisting moment to the frame. Uneven loads increase bending in one column and push the guiding parts harder on one side.
The 7545 lists a load capacity of 800N, roughly 80 kg of load according to the product page. Treat this as a design reference, not a licence to place all the weight on one side: capacity figures assume reasonable distribution, and structural performance drops when loads are concentrated far from the columns. Balanced placement of monitors and equipment, plus a frame width that suits the desktop, reduces stress on every part.
Engineers should also check static loading (equipment at rest) and dynamic loading (adjusting height with equipment on the desk, typing, leaning or bumping). Safety and testing standards for office tables, such as EN 527-2 and related test methods, cover mechanical safety and stability requirements; check the current edition applicable to your market.
Profile design is only one part of the system. These factors act together:

Cross-sectional geometry sets how well a column resists bending and twisting. Column dimensions control lateral stiffness. The telescopic structure determines how stability changes with height, and load distribution decides how much stress reaches each part. A stable height adjustable desk comes from the combined performance of the column and the whole frame, not from any one number.
